However new Macbook 13" with > approx 800GB storage have not been invented yet. I have my 24MPx cameras wound up to highest resolution and best quality JPEG + RAW.Ī simplistic approach to encoding a 6000x4000x3-colour image would require 72Mb of data 3Mb doesn't sound like much to represent an image of that theoretical resolution and colour depth, does it? Then you won't have thrown so much IQ away if you might (rare occasion) need it later. Only takes a minute or so to turn 100's of the larger files into the smaller ones. For your stated output preferences.that might be the better option to get a pleasing look.Ī better option is to simply shoot JPEG Fine & Large and simply resize with with a batch process. Might be better to shoot Jpeg Normal & medium size (3.7mb files) since that gives you a comparable resolution to Jpeg fine & basic size.with less artifacts. Jpeg basic means that all 14mp are used in the resulting JPEG but the compression ratio of the Jpeg is high (1:16) so JPEG artifacts will be noticeable when shooting high ISO, sharpening, zooming in, or even printing at 8x10 with even a moderate crop. I could use Large image size (24mpix full sensor resolution) Jpeg Basic or I could use Medium image size and Jpeg Normal. You also have the option of reducing image size. I am erring towards using 24mpix jpeg basic. I could use Large image size (24mpix full sensor resolution) Jpeg Basic or I could use Medium image size and Jpeg Normal. I'd like to reduce my D7100 files to 3MB in camera so that the images the D7100 churns out are about 3MB in size. I do occasionally use RAW, but this is rare. I've found from past usage that the 12mpix 3MB files (ie a D90 jpeg normal) meets my needs in almost all cases. Full size images do get shared over the cloud, thus file size is important. So roughly the same number of visible pixels as my 8x10 prints. I never print larger than 8x10 and usually I just look at the pics on a Mac with a 13" retina display, which is somwhere around 250dpi. My usage is that I prefer to get the settings right in the camera so I do minimal post processing. I find the 6MB file size in the D7100 24mpix Jpeg Normal setting a bit uncomfortably large for my usage. I know I will get comments that I should (a) shoot RAW all the time and (b) buy bigger hard drives. It must be used an escape character for this. (Note: the above condition - FOLDERNAME LIKE "C:\Foo\%" - isn't quite ok for 'Show All Folders (Recursive)' because the base folder can contain the '%' character. Also, I spoke offline with other guys which are interested on having it enhanced. Now the only thing left is to have a global filtering engine which will include also the 'Show All Folders (recursive)' in it, together with other things.Īs an aside, it seems that the interest for 'Show All Folders (recursive)' is pretty high these days. Hence saving such a 'filter' means basically saving/loading this text: "WHERE RATING =5 AND COLOR = 3 AND FOLDERNAME LIKE "C:\Foo\%"' which is trivial. All these conditions are ANDed between them and put in a WHERE clause of a DB query. Saved filters can be an interesting thing, if implemented correctly.īasically a multi-layered (composite) filtering engine consists of multiple pieces of text which describe different conditions - something like 'RATING = 5', 'COLOR = 3', 'FOLDERNAME LIKE "C:\Foo\%"' etc. Saved filter = a saved (composite) filtering condition upon data. Saved layout = a saved arrangement (position+visibility+docking state) of windows/panes and GUI widget states. First of all, I think that we're speaking here about saved FILTERS not Layouts.
